To Xu Gan
A scurry blows to reach the sun,
Which to the western hills will sink.
The moon rising is not yet round;
The stars all glimmer with a blink.
Great men work hard for their careers;
Mean as I am, I’ve no free hours.
At night I go for a free walk,
A walk between the Two towers.
Before the Letters Hall clouds rise;
The Wind Shrine juts into the sky.
A scurry hits the window panes;
The turtledoves on the eaves cry.
I think of you lodged in a hut,
Impoverished, and in despair.
The fern leaves can’t fill your stomach,
And you’ve no enough clothes to wear.
You are excited while you sigh,
And soon can compose a poem.
The treasure’s neglected, whose fault?
A good connoisseur is to blame.
To be known, you need a lead-in;
Everyone thinks himself so dear.
A good field is not late for crops;
A rich farm will see a good year.
Good virtue, like beautiful jade,
The more time goes, the more it’s out.
A good friend is for good advice;
Besides this, what can I talk about?
