比那咒骂的人声更美;
那么你先把眼皮闭紧,
我就让你睡,让你睡,
我把黄土轻轻盖着你,
我叫纸钱儿缓缓的飞。
Perhaps
By Wen Yiduo
Tr. Zhao yanchun
Perhaps, you're tired, having so cried
Perhaps, perhaps you'll take a nap
Then let the nightingale not cough
The frog not croak, the bat not flap
Let the sun not stir your eyelid
Let the breeze not brush your eyebrow
No, nobody should wake you up
The pine shade umbrellas you now
Perhaps you hear the earthworms twist
Hear the grassroots draw water there
Perhaps you hear music like this
More beautiful than that, that swear
Then close your eyes, close your eyes tight
I will let you sleep, a sleep sound
I will spread you with soil, light, light.
And fly joss paper all around
Wen Yiduo (Window, nicknamed Widow )(1899-1946), one of the early leaders of the Chinese Democratic League, a reprentative poet of the Crescent Moon Group, known as a poet that dances in fetters.
Window was born into a scholar's family in 1899. In 1916, he began tp publish his notes in Tsinghua Weekly, named Febuary Room Notes. His works include such collections as Red Candle, Dead Water.
During his stay in the United States, he wrote "Song of Seven". He was assasinated in 1946 by GMT agents.
He
put forward a proposal for New Poetry called "Three Beuties": Beauty of music, beauty of painting, and beauty of archtecture, wherewith he laid the foundation of New Metric Poetry, overcomed such inadequacies of Vernacualr Poetry as looseness and arbitrariness. This "three Beauties" proposal is regarded as his contribution to the New Metric Movement.
Perhaps is an elegy addressed to his daughter in 1926. When he was teaching at a national politics and law university, his wife and daughter were seriously ill. At the news, he huurried back home only to see his daughter dead. After her burial, he wrote this poem.
