Put forth disorder'd twigs; her fallow leas

The darnel, hemlock and rank fumitory 45

Doth root upon, while that the coulter rusts

That should deracinate such savagery;

The even mead, that erst brought sweetly forth

The freckled cowslip, burnet and green clover,

Wanting the scythe, all uncorrected, rank,    50

Conceives by idleness and nothing teems

But hateful docks, rough thistles, kecksies, burs,

Losing both beauty and utility.

…那树篱，向来修剪得齐齐整整，现在可就像披头散发的囚犯，只顾把枝桠乱长；在那休耕地上，只见毒麦、苦芹、蔓延的廷胡索站住了脚、扎下了根——那本该用来铲除这些恶草的锄头，却生了锈！那平坦的牧场，当初有多么美好，缀满了满脸雀斑的牵牛花、地榆和绿油油的金花菜，就因为缺乏管理、缺少镰刀的整顿，变得荒芜了，像一个懒婆娘怀了一胎懒孕，没什么好生养，只能拿可恶的羊蹄草、粗糙的蓟、毒胡萝卜、牛蒡当儿女——她原来的风韵给破坏了。
