The Great Emperor
A great lord should know how to rule,
Erect, with peace, with the Word right.
All states come to pay their respect,
His great worth brings all caves to light.
When the triune go see the lord,
From him they’d not hide their reports.
The vassal states have duties grave;
They should keep canons of all sorts.
When courtiers present proposals,
The lord considers each, so kind.
He falls mute because he loves all;
With restraints, he weighs them in mind.
But with all the laws and canons,
He should not yield to selfish deals.
All the vassal lords should go serve,
With their bestowed ribbons and seals.
At right time, they leave the palace;
The court turns quiet, all away.
The king feels tender now with care;
The queen thinks of her sons’ hard way.
What gifts should be given to them?
Gems, jewels, treasures of that ilk
And cash, a hundred millions taels,
Like hued clouds are satin and silk.
The carts and horses are all decked,
With satin, silver and gold dressed.
The dragon flags fly with tassels,
Behold the bright wheels and plumed crest.
The vassal lords are moved to think:
I’ ve all, not having tried my hand.
I’ll try my best to be the best,
Even give my life to the land.
The military band wave spears;
Their helpers are busy about.
For farewell, the nobles come on,
Their carts wayside, from out to out.
The vehicles are well in order;
The pages wait in full array.
The guards ride their steed, front and back,
With the sound of drums and flute play.
When lauding Trip God at East Gate,
They shed tears, wetting their cap lace.
Aboard the carts, they look around:
All are nobles of the same race.
As they go on, it’s getting dark,
When can they come back, when can they?
The wheels turn on and then turn back,
The four horses linger and neigh.
The spectators feel their tears flood,
Let alone kin of the same blood.
