Roses are the pride and glory of Bulgaria. Thanks to it the country is called “rose garden”, “the country of roses” by foreigners.
Not surprisingly, the rose is called “THE QUEEN OF FLOWERS”. It has always amazed people with its beauty and delicate fragrance. Ancient Greeks believed that the rose bush appeared from the sea foam in which the goddess of beauty and love – Aphrodite – was born too.
Rose has been known since antiquity. Its images have been found even in ancient Babylon (where the rose was a sacred flower). It was known to the Jews too. Homer speaks of roses and Herodotus tells about fragrant roses in the gardens of ancient Macedonia.
Botany studies around 7000 different rose species from which only 200 oil-bearing.
When,where and how the rose bush was brought to Bulgaria remains a mystery. Konstantin Irechek suggests it happened during the Ottoman rule, probably in the beginning of the XVIII century. At first roses were only graced the magnificent gardens of the Turkish beys. Gradually roses started to appear in the gardens and homes of Bulgarians, initially grown as ornamental flowers.
