我认为，要做好汉英翻译，尤其是涉及中国传统文化方面的汉英翻译，译者需要研究和借鉴这方面较成熟的英文文献。譬如，大英博物馆的网站上，就有许多中国文物的介绍（大英博物馆的中国文物馆藏非常丰富，原因么，你懂的）。我们在翻译文博类的材料时，不妨认真借鉴，有时候还真能解决一些难题。譬如，我有阵子很是纳闷，瓷器或青铜器的“撇口”怎么译。后来还是在大英博物馆的网站上找到了答案——everted
lip：
e.g. This delicately potted tuotai (bodiless) (按：对应的中文为“脱胎”) stemcup has an elegantly formed bowl with funnel-shaped sides and a gently everted lip.
译成中文，套用文博类文字的一套术语，大概是这样：
此脱胎高足杯做工精致，杯体造型典雅，杯壁作漏斗状，口沿微向外撇。

类似的例子太多了，不胜枚举，足可写篇论文。
今天做翻译又遇到个难题——“少府监”。这是个古代官职机构（具体含义，参见百度百科“少府监”词条），英文怎么译，找了半天，终于在CHINAKNOWLEDGE（http://www.chinaknowledge.de/index.html）上找到个比较满意的译法——Directorate of Imperial Manufactories，出自该网站上介绍”唐六典“的一篇文章（http://www.chinaknowledge.de/Literature/Historiography/tangliudian.html）。这篇文章里还给出了一系列古代政府机构的译法，如：
The Department of State Affairs (shangshusheng 尚書省)
The Chancellery (menxiasheng 門下省)
The Imperial Secretariat (zhongshusheng 中書省)
The Palace Library (Mishusheng 秘書省)
The Palace Administration (dianzhongsheng 殿中省)
The Censorate (yushitai 御史臺)
The nine courts (jiusi 九寺)
The five directorates (wujian 五監)
太常寺 Taichangsi The Court of Imperial Sacrifices
光禄寺 Guanglusi The Court of Imperial Entertainments

若有兴趣，可以好好看看这个网站，上面有许多介绍中国文化的内容，对译者很有启发。如果没有这样的网站，遇上“少府监”这样的名词，那真是傻眼了。
类似的网站，其实还有许多。不做汉译英，还真的不大可能查阅这类网站；不看这类网站，还真的不知道，有些老外对中国文化热爱和熟悉到何种程度。譬如有个网站（网址一时找不到了），是个学古琴的老外弄的，上面有大量关于古琴的文字，还有他的演奏录音！还有个网站，是个叫Richard Sears的美国老头办的，叫Chinese Etymology（http://www.chineseetymology.org/mandarin.aspx），是他“二十年努力工作的成果”。
做翻译是件辛苦的事，但能够因此而看到这样的网站，知道这样的牛人存在，的确是令人欣慰和鼓舞的。
