在旧书店淘到一本The Chinese Literary Scene，作者Kai-yu Hsu（许芥昱）。他文革时到中国访问，采访了当时文学界的红人，如浩然等，还碰到他西南联大时的同学汪曾祺（《沙家浜》编剧）和李慕良（《沙家浜》作曲，马连良琴师），一起切磋了《沙家浜》。许先生西南联大外文系毕业，1959年在斯坦福得中文博士，后到旧金山州立大学教中文和书法，1982年死于泥石流。
许先生和汪曾祺、李慕良见面时，汪很放得开，而李则很拘谨，并不时提醒汪“领导说过”等。许先生和汪先生早年都曾师从沈从文。许还说汪在西南联大时是京剧社的活跃成员，爱唱，但唱的不好。如果按受众的人数算，汪曾祺最成功的作品肯定就是《沙家浜》了。其中《智斗》一折,生（马长礼的刁德一）、旦（洪雪飞的阿庆嫂）、净（周和桐的胡传魁）的对唱非常给力，一点不输于传统戏《大-探-二》（大保国-探皇陵-二进宫）的三人对啃。文革时，中国人的语言，除了语录和口号外，样板戏提供了很多说话的范本。今天看来，《沙家浜》的贡献最大，其中“人一走，茶就凉”等语，已成为中文日常惯用语的一部分。从这个意义说，汪曾祺的历史地位，不应该亚于王朔。
许先生书中附有《智斗》一折的英文翻译，应该出自他本人之手。有意思的是“江湖”一词，许先生也译成“rivers and
lakes”。

though nothing happened)
骗走了东洋兵，我才躲过大难一场， (She fooled the Japs until they went away,
giving me a narrow escape)
（阿庆嫂上） (Sister Ah-Qing listens, teapot and cups in
hands)
似这样救命之恩终身不忘， (Thus she saved my life. I cant't forget as long
as I live)
俺胡某讲义气， (I, Hu Chuan-kuei, respect obligation. )
终当报偿。 (I must repay her somehow)
阿庆嫂：参谋长，烟不好，请抽一支呀！胡司令，抽一支！(Chief of Staff, these are not good
cigarettes but have one anyway. Commander Hu, have a
cigarette)
刁德一：（望着阿庆嫂背影，唱）【反西皮摇板】这个女人不寻常！([reverse xi-pi swaying beat]
This is not an ordinary woman)
阿庆嫂：（接唱）刁德一有什么鬼心肠？(What dirty tricks does Diao De-yi have up
his sleeve?)
胡传魁：（唱）【西皮摇板】这小刁一点面子也不讲！(This little Diao , he make no
allowances even for my sake)
阿庆嫂：（接唱）这草包倒是一堵挡风的墙。(This stupid hay bag serves, after all, as
a good cover for me)
刁德一：（略一想，打开烟盒请阿庆嫂抽烟）抽烟！〔阿庆嫂摇手拒绝。(Have a smoke. [Sister Ay-Qing
declines)
胡传魁：人家不会，你干什么！(She does not smoke. What are you doing?)
刁德一：（接唱）她态度不卑又不亢。(Her sttitude is neither hostile, nor
subservient)
阿庆嫂：（唱）【西皮流水】他神情不阴又不阳。(His expression is neither this nor
that)
胡传魁：（唱）【西皮摇板】刁德一搞的什么鬼花样？(What's Diao De-yi up to with his
tricks)
阿庆嫂：（唱）【西皮流水】他们到底是姓蒋还是姓汪？(What are they? Chiang's men or
Wang's men)
刁德一：（唱）【西皮摇板】我待要旁敲侧击将她访。(I must try devious ways to find her
out)
阿庆嫂：（接唱）我必须察言观色把他防。(I must watch his words and expressions to
guard against him)
〔阿庆嫂欲进屋。刁德一从她的身后叫住。(Sister Ah-Qing wants to enter the house,
Diao calls to stop her)
刁德一：阿庆嫂！（唱）【西皮流水】适才听得司令讲，(The commander has just said)
阿庆嫂真是不寻常。(Sister Ah-Qing is really an extraordinary
woman)
我佩服你沉着机灵有胆量，(I admire your courage, composure, and presence of
mind)
竟敢在鬼子面前耍花枪。(And you dared to trick and fool the Japanese
devils)
若无有抗日救国的好思想，(If you weren't determined to fight Japan to save
our country)
焉能够舍己救人不慌张！(You couldn't have been so selfless and so
brave)
阿庆嫂：（接唱）参谋长休要谬夸奖，(Chief of Staff, you are wasting your good
words)
舍己救人不敢当……(I dare not say I was selfless in saving others'
lives)
开茶馆，盼兴旺，(I run a teahouse; I I look for is good
business)
江湖义气第一桩。(For this I must observe the ethics of "rivers and
lakes")
司令常来又常往，(The commander comes often, though he goes away
often)
我有心背靠大树好乘凉。(I need a big tree to lean on, to shelter me with
its shade)
也是司令洪福广，(Of course, it was also the commander's own good
luck)
方能遇难又呈祥。(That the danger awaiting him melted away)
刁德一：（接唱）新四军久在沙家浜，(The New Fourth Army has been here for a long
time)
这棵大树有阴凉，(That big tree also has extensive shade)
你与他们常来往，(You also deal with them many, many times)
想必是安排照应更周详！(Perhaps you arrange things for them, take care of
them even more thoughtful than you do us)
垒起七星灶， (I built a sever-star stove)
铜壶煮三江。 (My copper kettle boils water from all Three Rivers)
摆开八仙桌， (I set up a table of hour sides with eight seats)
招待十六方。 (To accommodate people from sixteen different directions)
来得都是客， (All who come here are my guests)
全凭嘴一张。 (And all I have is this mouth of mine)
相逢开口笑， (I greet them with a smile whenever we meet)
过后不思量。 (But after we part I think nothing of it at all)
人一走，茶就凉。 (The moment they leave, their tea gets cold)
