读史者,   In reading history books, one must try

考实录，  To search for facts and on true records rely; 

通古今，  Once well versed in the historical events,

若亲目。  You'd feel to have experienced personally.

口而诵，  Read them aloud, with mind and care;

心而惟，  Of what you are reading, be clear aware;

朝于斯，  Be bent on what it is considered right,

夕于斯。  And maintain your effort day and night.

昔仲尼，  Of yore, Confucius condescended to learn 

师项橐，  From Xiang Tuo, aged only seven but wise,(1)

古圣贤，  In old times, even sages and great scholars

尚勤学。  Were modest,earnest to learn and seek advice.

赵中令，  Zhao Pu, Prime Minister under Song Taizu,(2)

读鲁论，  He nightly studied Analects of Lu.

彼既士，  Though full engaged in state affairs was he,

学且勤。  Still he could find enough time for study.

披蒲编，  Wen Shu on rush-mat copied out lines from a book,

削竹简，  Gongyang Hong on bamboo slips characters cut;（3）

彼无书，  They, being too poor to afford books anyway,

知自勉。  Exerted themselves to learn and win their way.

头悬梁，  Sun Jing on a beam overhead his hair hung;

锥刺股，  And Su Qin to drive sleep away his thighs stung;（4）

彼不教，  Both tried to keep their heads awake and right

自勤苦。  While sitting reading late into the night.

注：

 （1）仲尼，即孔子，名丘，字仲尼（公元前551年——前479年，鲁国人，春秋末思想家，政治家和教育家，儒家学派创始人。项橐：春秋人，“生七岁为孔子师”（见《史记@甘茂列传附甘罗》）

（2）赵中令，即赵普，字则平（公元921——991），曾为中书令。《鲁论》：汉代文本《论语》之一。

（3）相传汉代有个温舒，家庭清贫，无力买书，在大沼泽牧羊时，将蒲草编成草席，借来《尚书》，抄在上面阅读。相传公羊弘50多岁了，替人家放猪，他自制竹简，借来《春秋》抄写自学。

（4）头悬梁：相传晋代孙敬，常读书到深夜，他怕困倦，不能自持，便用绳子系着头发挂在屋梁上。如果发瞌睡，头坠下来，绳子便把他扯醒。锥刺股：相传战国时代的苏秦，昼夜苦读，深夜困倦时，就用锥子刺大腿来解困。
