The Concealed Deer -- 林语堂英译
郑人有薪于野者，遇骇鹿，御而击之，毙之。
There was a woodcutter in Cheng who came across a frightened deer
in the field
and shot and killed it.
恐人见之也，遽而藏诸隍中，覆之以蕉，不胜其喜。
Afraid that others might see it, he hid it in a ditch and covered
it with dried
grass and leaves, and was greatly delighted.
俄而遗其所藏之处，遂以为梦焉，
Soon afterward, however, he forgot where he had hidden the deer and
believed
that it must have all happened in a dream.
顺涂而咏其事。
As a dream, he told everybody in the streets.
傍人有闻者，用其言而取之。
Among the listeners, there was one
who heard the story of his dream and went to
search for the concealed deer and found it.
既归，告其室人曰：“向薪者梦得鹿而不知其处，吾今得之，彼直真梦矣。
He brought it home and told his wife, “There was a woodcutter who
dreamed he had
killed a deer and forgot where he hid it, and here I found it. He
is really a
dreamer.”
室人曰：“若将是梦见薪者之得鹿邪？讵有薪者邪？今真得鹿，是若之梦真邪？
”You must have dreamed yourself that you saw a woodcutter who had
killed a deer.
Do you really believe that there was a real woodcutter? But now you
have really
got a deer, so your dream must have been a real one,” said the
wife.
夫曰：“吾据得鹿，何用知彼梦我梦邪？”
”I’ve found the deer,” answered the husband; “what’s the use of
discussing
whether it was he did the dreaming, or I?"
