Three Poems Lamenting Autumn
Rain
Du Fu
On the heels of the wind tread
the endless autumn rains.
From one thundercloud that
ceils the seas and continents,
Confounding horse and ox in a
waterfall
Till the turbid Ching and clear
Wei roll indistinct!
The shoots of rice turn inward,
the ears of corn turn black;
From farmer and from peasant
there are no bulletins.
In the city a picul of rice
exchanges for a quilt,
When both agree who argues
their respective worth?
