Perseverance
By Cao Zhi
Tr. Zhao Yanchun
Perseverance melts stone and gold;
Sincerity moves the divine.
The wife from Qi cries for her man;
The Liang Mountains for her decline.
When Zi was a hostage in Qin,
God crows whitened and horse horns glossed.
When Zou was imprisoned in Yan,
The summer heat turned into frost.
A filial girl east of the Pass
Was known to all, Lai Qing by name.
In prime, she revenged her father;
Her death won her a lasting fame.
Nu Xiu was pardoned for murder,
When a broad sword on her neck shone.
These two girls on the roll of death,
Both survived, although one was gone.
Once, an official was sentenced
And was imprisoned in the town.
He had no son for help, he groaned,
As his disaster was coming down.
His daughter felt sorry for him,
And trudged west to lodge an appeal.
She paced up and down by the court,
Her tears falling down a great deal.
He begged to be a maid at court,
And would sell herself as a slave.
Emperor Wen of Han was moved
And from his sentence did him save.
Her father was exempted thus,
And she was praised for her good stuff.
You have no use for many sons;
A single daughter is enough.
When Jian Zi was to cross the stream,
The drunk ferry man marred the boat.
When he faced his death as per law,
His daughter cried, a plaintive note:
When my father knew you came on
And this dangerous river would wade,
He was afraid of wind and waves,
And hence to River God he prayed.
He prepared a meal for the god,
And for Your Lordship asked for bliss.
He was sincere that he drank much,
And committed a fault like this.
If you, my lord, will punish him,
Please wake him, let him know his due.
If I could, I would die instead.
Her love and faith so moved the blue.
The lord rewarded her great act,
And pardoned him and spared his life.
She sang her thanks amid the stream;
The lord would have her as his wife.
When he returned, he summoned her;
Her fame and favor all o’erran.
Her argument saved her father;
What should be talked of a young man?
His Majesty now betters the world;
Worth and virtue he does expand.
This will lead to peace and order,
And change customs all o’er the land.
With laws, canons except all wrongs,
What more can a daughter complain?
Long live His Majesty, we pray;
We all enjoy happiness and gain!
