 译出 something of a …… 的韵味

   先来看一个句子：I must confess the news did come as something of a

surprise for us. 有人将这个句子译成：我得说这消息对我们而言真是出乎意料。

将“something of a surprise”译成“真是出乎意料”，有点夸大其意了。如果将

something of a surprise 改成 much of a surprise, 则译文OK了。

  “something of a + 名词” 是语气上弱势表达的一种特殊结构，意思是“有一

点”、“有几分”。在翻译时，译者往往忽视其韵味，常漏译或错译其意。下面再来

看一些漏译或错译something of a 的句例。

   1）I have always been a playful person, and something of a teaser, because I 

      enjoy laughing.

      原译：我一直是好玩的人，喜欢作弄人，因为我享受笑声。

       改译：我一直都很好玩，有点喜欢作弄人，因为我享受笑声。

   2）The soldier found himself something of a hero when he returned to his

      hometown after the victory in the battle.

      原译：战斗胜利返回家乡，这位士兵觉得自己是个英雄。

      改译：战斗胜利返回家乡，这位士兵觉得自己有点像个英雄。

   3）While she rubs shoulders with thr rich and famous, it appears that the former

      supermodel lacks something of the common touch.

      原译：尽管她跻身富豪名流，这位前超级名模似乎缺少接触普通人的气质。

      改译：尽管她跻身富豪名流，但看起来这位前超级名模却不够平易近人。

   4）Launching antitrust complaints has become something of a competitive weapon

      in the technology business.

      原译：启动反垄断的投诉已经成了技术商业领域内一种有竞争力的武器。

      改译：启动反垄断的投诉在某种程度上已经成了技术商业领域内一种有竞争力的武器。

   5）Body act is nothing new. But, whenever it raises its head, it usually causes

     something of a stir.

       原译：人体艺术尽管不是什么新鲜事儿，但每当进入公众视野时，通常都会引起不小的轰

            动。

      改译：人体艺术尽管不是什么新鲜事儿，但每当进入公众视野时，通常多少还是会引起一

            些轰动。

   6）I felt it was something of a feminist act, which in in retrospect,

      ridicuous.

      原译：那时我把它（指搞婚外情）看做是伸张女权主义的行为，回过头想想，简直太愚蠢

            了。

      改译：那时我只是把它（指搞婚外情）看做是伸张女权主义的行为而已，回过头想想，简

            直太愚蠢了。
